Grace and Righteousness

1. “Thou shalt have no other god before me”  Exodus 20:3

You cannot serve or worship anything over God. This includes hobbies, families, or anything. You have to be willing to give up everything, and serve only God. One cannot worship sex, money, or self-righteousness. If you live your life for God, but have a strong addiction to sex you are also serving sex as an idol.

“No servant can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.” Luke 16:13

“Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be.” Romans 8:7

You cannot serve your flesh ( internal desires such as lust, pride, glory, blood lust, righteousness) and still live for God.

2. “Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image” Exodus 20:4

You must not worship anything besides God. Even the Bible, filled with truth can be perverted by interpretation. You mustn’t idolize religion. You are worshiping God, not worshiping a set of rule or commandments. You mustn’t live your life following rules, you must live your life following God.

3.  “Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain” Exodus 20:7

You must honor his name, do not use his name for things not pertaining to him. Do not use his name for war, or for your own personal gain. You shouldn’t say “Come give charity to me for God.”

4. “Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy” Exodus 20:8

5. “Honour thy father and thy mother” Exodus 20:12

6.  “Thou shalt not kill” Exodus 20:13

7.  “Thou shalt not commit adultery” Exodus 20:14

“But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart”

Matthew 5:28

You must be pure in heart, and not commit adultery physically, or spiritually.

“And if thy right eye offend thee, pluck it out, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell.” Matthew 5:29

Logically if your eye be the thing that cause you to sin, and be condemned to hell is it not better to lose that eye rather than lose your whole body and soul in hell?

“But I say unto you, That whosoever shall put away his wife, saving for the cause of fornication, causeth her to commit adultery; and whosoever shall marry her that is divorced committeth adultery.” Matthew 5:32

8.  “Thou shalt not steal” Exodus 20:15

9. “Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour” Exodus 20:16

“For by thy word thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned.” Matthew 12:37

10.  “Thou shalt not covet” Exodus 20:17

Do not covet for yourself, such as “I will be rich as Bill Gates” or “I will be as pretty as so and so”, because then you value those things, vanity and greed over God. Those covets become your idol, also do not make self covenants such as “I will never love again” as those become your laws, as well as your idols.

The Bible, is filled with laws, commandments, and truth. Many people in search of righteousness, acceptance, or love take it upon themselves this boulder. This boulder however will in the end crush them, and that is why we often see many people leave the faith. The scripture is truth, and truth will crush people who do not know grace. When you read the bible do not condemn yourselves for the things you do wrong against God. For all men since the defilement of Adam are born with evil in their flesh. It is natural for us to lie, kill, cheat, commit adultery, have pride, and rebel against God. We are all born wretched and wicked, and this is what these things are trying to tell us.

“Except ye be converted and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven” Matthew 18:16

To enter heaven you must be as pure and humble as a child is what this scripture says. But this isn’t what it’s trying to tell you, all these harsh truths are for comparison for us to realize our wretchedness. This is where a lot of people abandon the faith either because of desperation or condemnation. When we realize this truth we then must know that we have Grace, and our sins have been paid for on the cross. We must realize that God isn’t ruthless or cruel he is loving and kind. We are already all saved and ready for salvation as we realize that Jesus paid for our ticket. We do not need to condemn ourselves in our search for righteousness as righteousness is only achieved through Christ. The grace that we get from Christ not only pays for our sin, but also purifies us from wanting sin. When we give ourselves to God, he gives us the grace to change and to want to follow the commandments. The ten commandments and other rules, are not meant to be followed by yourself to achieve righteousness, but to show us that they are only follow able through grace. When Jesus said to cast out your eye, he didn’t mean it literally, he said it as shock value. Even if you cast out your eye you can still lust in your heart. It’s your heart that must change, and you can only do it through grace.

“Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ” Romans 5:1

However, accepting this through faith is hard. As humans we take refuge in certainty, and faith a lot of the time deals with the unknown and the uncertain. This is why people tend to search for righteousness through commandments and rules. These things are certain, if they live by the law they feel safe, but even though we are made in the image of God we are not God. Living life, and serving the lord through rules is impossible as non of us are perfect. In the end this is a trust problem, that can only be fixed through one’s journey with God, and realizing his love for us.
